The natural stance is a vancouver-based non-profit organization dedicated to promoting mental health awareness, personal development, and addiction prevention. Co-founded by dr. Pouya azar, a leading psychiatrist and addiction medicine specialist, and professional skateboarder chris haslam, the organization merges cutting-edge clinical expertise with the grassroots energy of skateboarding culture to inspire meaningful change. Dr. Azar, who heads the complex pain and addiction services (cpas) department at vancouver general hospital, has spent years at the forefront of addiction research and treatment. Witnessing the profound impact of addiction on individuals and families, he recognized the Need to shift focus toward prevention- addressing the roots of addiction before they take hold. Chris haslam, a professional skateboarder with over 30 years of experience, became deeply invested in mental health advocacy after the loss of his friend ben raemers. Through his brand, brainchild skateboards, haslam sought to raise awareness of mental health issues within the skateboarding community but quickly realized the challenges of navigating such a complex and urgent cause.
Dr. Azar and haslam joined forces to create a campaign rooted in subcultural influence, Focusing on communities like skateboarding that are tight-knit and driven by peer dynamics. They recognized that individuals drawn to high-risk, High-reward lifestyles-often characterized by impulsivity, novelty-seeking, and comfort in uncertainty -Could be particularly vulnerable to addictive behaviors. By leveraging the positive power of social influence within these communities, the natural stance aims to foster behavioral change and build resilience from within. Through education, outreach, and tailored programs, the natural stance seeks to create a culture of support and understanding, where mental health is destigmatized, and individuals are empowered to make healthier choices. While the challenges are immense, the mission is clear: changing lives, one person at a time. Together, we can build a future where mental health and personal growth are embraced, and addiction is prevented through community, compassion, and the courage to stand for something greater.
